Bratwurst with Sauerkraut

Ingredients
- 4 bratwurst sausages
- 24 oz sauerkraut
- 1 onion
- 1 apple (optional)
- 2 tbsp butter
- ½ tsp caraway seeds
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ cup chicken broth
- 2 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)
Steps
- Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add bratwurst and brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove bratwurst and set aside.
- Add sliced onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. If using, add diced apple and cook for another 3 minutes.
- Stir in sauerkraut, caraway seeds, salt, and pepper. Pour in chicken broth.
- Return bratwurst to the skillet, nestling them into the sauerkraut mixture.
- Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until bratwurst are cooked through and sauerkraut is heated.
- Serve hot, with Dijon mustard on the side if desired.
