Ingredients

  • 4 bratwurst sausages
  • 24 oz sauerkraut
  • 1 onion
  • 1 apple (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • ½ tsp caraway seeds
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ cup chicken broth
  • 2 tbsp Dijon mustard (optional)

Steps

  1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add bratwurst and brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove bratwurst and set aside.
  2. Add sliced onion to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. If using, add diced apple and cook for another 3 minutes.
  3. Stir in sauerkraut, caraway seeds, salt, and pepper. Pour in chicken broth.
  4. Return bratwurst to the skillet, nestling them into the sauerkraut mixture.
  5. Cover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until bratwurst are cooked through and sauerkraut is heated.
  6. Serve hot, with Dijon mustard on the side if desired.
