Ingredients

  • 1½ lb beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 4 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, grated
  • ½ Asian pear, grated (optional)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • ½ yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional)
  • 4 cup cooked white rice (optional)

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, grated Asian pear (if using), and black pepper to create the marinade.
  2. Add the thinly sliced beef to the marinade, ensuring all pieces are well coated. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours for best flavor.
  3. Heat cooking oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add the thinly sliced yellow onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the marinated beef to the skillet in a single layer, working in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through.
  5. Stir in the sliced green onions and cook for another minute.
  6. Serve the bulgogi immediately, garnished with sesame seeds if desired, alongside cooked white rice.
