Swedish Meatballs
Classic Swedish meatballs in a creamy gravy, perfect for a comforting family meal.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- ½ lb ground pork
- ½ onion
- 1 egg
- ½ cup bread crumbs
- ¼ cup milk
- 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cup beef broth
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ¼ tsp allspice
- ⅛ tsp nutmeg
- ¼ cup lingonberry jam (optional)
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley (optional)
Steps
- Finely dice the onion and sauté in 1 tablespoon butter until softened. Let cool.
- In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, cooled onion, egg, bread crumbs, milk, salt, pepper, allspice, and nutmeg. Mix gently until just combined.
- Form the mixture into small, 1-inch meatballs.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the meatballs in batches, then remove and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute to make a roux. Gradually whisk in beef broth and heavy cream, bringing to a simmer.
- Return the meatballs to the skillet with the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until cooked through.
- Serve hot, optionally garnished with fresh parsley and a side of lingonberry jam.
