Ingredients

  • 1½ lb beef sirloin or ribeye, thinly sliced
  • ½ cup soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 4 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, grated
  • ½ Asian pear or apple, grated
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 3 green onions, sliced
  • ½ white onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional)
  • 4 cup cooked white rice (optional)

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, minced garlic, grated ginger, grated pear or apple, and black pepper to make the marinade.
  2. Add the thinly sliced beef, half of the sliced green onions, and the sliced white onion to the marinade. Mix well to ensure all beef is coated. Marinate for at least 20 minutes at room temperature, or up to 4 hours in the refrigerator.
  3. Heat a large skillet or grill pan over medium-high heat. Add a small amount of oil if needed.
  4. Working in batches if necessary, cook the marinated beef and onions for 2-4 minutes per side, until browned and cooked through. Avoid overcrowding the pan to ensure good searing.
  5. Transfer the cooked bulgogi to a serving platter. Garnish with the remaining green onions and sesame seeds, if using.
  6. Serve immediately with cooked white rice, if desired.
