Dal Fry
A comforting and aromatic Indian lentil dish, slow-cooked to perfection and tempered with a flavorful spice tarka.
Ingredients
- 1 cup Toor dal
- 2½ cup water
- 1½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 3 tbs ghee
- 1 cup chopped tomatoes
- ½ tsp cumin seeds
- ½ tsp mustard seeds
- 2 bay leaf
- 1 tbs green chili
- 2 tsp ginger
- ½ tsp red pepper powder
- 1 tsp sugar
- ¼ tsp garam masala
- 2 tbs cilantro (optional)
Steps
- Wash and soak toor dal in water for at least one hour, then drain.
- Combine soaked dal with 2.5 cups water, 1 tsp salt, and turmeric in a pot. Cook on medium-high heat for about 30 minutes until dal is soft and soup-like.
- In a separate frying pan, heat ghee. Add cumin seeds and mustard seeds and let them crackle.
- Stir in bay leaves, green chili, ginger, and red pepper powder; cook for a few seconds.
- Add chopped tomatoes, 0.5 tsp salt, and sugar to the pan. Cook until tomatoes are tender and mushy.
- Mix in cilantro and garam masala; cook for one minute.
- Pour the seasoned mixture (tarka) over the cooked dal, stir well, and cook for another minute.
- Serve hot with naan or rice.
