Homemade Sushi Rolls
Craft your own delicious sushi rolls at home with fresh cucumber and a creamy Japanese mayonnaise, perfect for a fun and customizable meal.
Ingredients
- 1½ cup sushi rice
- ¼ cup rice wine vinegar
- 2 tbsp granulated sugar
- 3 tbsp Japanese mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp soy sauce (optional)
- 1 cucumber
- 4 nori sheets
- ½ can tuna (optional)
- 4 oz smoked salmon (optional)
- 4 oz shrimp (optional)
Steps
- Prepare sushi rice according to package directions. Once cooked, mix in rice wine vinegar and sugar.
- Lay a nori sheet, shiny-side down, on a sushi rolling mat. Dip hands in vinegared water and pat a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving a clear strip at the far edge.
- Spread a thin line of Japanese mayonnaise down the middle of the rice, then add your chosen fillings like cucumber, tuna, or smoked salmon.
- Lift the edge of the mat and roll tightly, applying gentle pressure. Moisten the clear edge of the nori with a little water to seal the roll.
- Wrap the sushi roll tightly in cling film. Let it rest for a few minutes to set.
- Unwrap the cling film and, using a sharp, damp knife, slice the roll into thick pieces.
- Serve immediately with soy sauce if desired.
