Italian Sausage and Peppers
A classic Italian-American dish featuring savory Italian sausage, bell peppers, and onions simmered in a rich tomato sauce.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb Italian sausage links
- 1 tbsp Olive oil
- 3 large Bell peppers (red, green, or yellow)
- 1 large Yellow onion
- 3 clove Garlic
- 15 oz Crushed tomatoes
- ½ tsp Dried oregano
- ½ tsp Salt
- ¼ tsp Black pepper
- ¼ cup Fresh basil (optional)
- 4 Crusty bread or rolls (optional)
Steps
- Slice bell peppers and onion into strips. Mince garlic.
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Add Italian sausage links and brown on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove sausage and set aside.
- Add sliced bell peppers and onion to the skillet, cooking until softened, about 7-10 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Return sausage to the skillet. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
- Reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until sausage is cooked through and flavors have melded. If desired, slice sausages into smaller pieces before serving.
- Garnish with fresh basil if using. Serve hot, either on its own or with crusty bread or rolls.
