Lentil Dal
A comforting and aromatic Indian lentil stew, perfect for a warming meal.
Ingredients
- 1½ cup red lentils
- 4 cup water
- 2 tbsp ghee (optional)
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion
- 3 clove garlic
- 1 inch ginger
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp coriander powder
- ½ tsp garam masala
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ cup canned diced tomatoes (optional)
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro (optional)
- 4 lemon wedge (optional)
Steps
- Rinse the red lentils thoroughly under cold water until the water runs clear. Set aside.
- Heat oil (or ghee) in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add chopped onion and sauté until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for another minute until aromatic.
- Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, and garam masala. Cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
- Stir in the rinsed lentils, water, and salt. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 20-25 minutes, or until lentils are tender and have thickened. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- If using, stir in diced tomatoes during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot, garnished with fresh cilantro and a lemon wedge, if desired.
