Matar Paneer

A classic Indian vegetarian curry featuring tender paneer cheese and sweet green peas simmered in a fragrant, spicy tomato-based sauce.

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp sunflower oil
  • 450 g paneer
  • 4 clove ginger
  • 2 tsp cumin
  • 2 tsp turmeric
  • 2 tsp ground coriander
  • 2 green chili
  • 8 tomatoes
  • 300 g peas
  • 2 tsp garam masala
  • ½ bunch fresh cilantro (optional)
  • 4 naan bread (optional)

Steps

  1. Heat oil in a frying pan over high heat. Add paneer and fry until browned on all sides, then remove and drain on paper towels.
  2. Add ginger, cumin, turmeric, ground coriander, and green chili to the pan. Fry for 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Add tomatoes, mashing them with the back of a spoon. Simmer for 5 minutes until the sauce is fragrant, adding a splash of water if too thick.
  4. Season the sauce well with salt and pepper.
  5. Stir in the peas and simmer for 2 minutes.
  6. Add the fried paneer and sprinkle with garam masala, stirring to combine.
  7. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves, if desired, and serve hot with naan bread or rice.
