Mutter Paneer
A classic Indian vegetarian curry featuring soft paneer cheese and sweet green peas in a rich, spiced tomato-based sauce.
Ingredients
- 14 oz paneer
- 1½ cup green peas, frozen
- 1 medium onions
- 2 tsp ginger-garlic paste
- 15 oz canned crushed tomatoes
- ½ cup water
- 2 tbsp ghee or vegetable oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- ½ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp coriander powder
- 1 tsp garam masala
- ½ tsp red chili powder (optional)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp sugar (optional)
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro (optional)
Steps
- Cut the paneer into 1-inch cubes. Finely chop the onion.
- Heat ghee or oil in a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter for a few seconds. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown, about 8-10 minutes.
- Stir in ginger-garlic paste and cook for 1 minute until fragrant. Add turmeric powder, coriander powder, red chili powder (if using), and salt. Cook for 30 seconds, stirring constantly.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes and cook, stirring occasionally, until the mixture thickens and the oil separates from the sides, about 8-10 minutes.
- Add water, frozen peas, and paneer cubes. Bring to a simmer, then cover and cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and peas to cook through.
- Stir in garam masala and sugar (if using). Cook for another 2 minutes. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro, if desired, and serve hot with rice or naan.
