Ingredients

  • 1 lb Italian sausage
  • 1 medium onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 12 oz dried pasta (e.g., penne, rotini)
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese (optional)
  • ¼ cup fresh basil (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Steps

  1. Remove sausage from casings (if applicable) and brown in a large pot or Dutch oven over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain excess fat and set sausage aside.
  2. Add olive oil to the pot, then add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-5 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for 1 minute more until fragrant.
  3. Return the cooked sausage to the pot. Add crushed tomatoes, chicken broth, dried pasta, salt, and pepper. Stir well to combine.
