Quick Salt & Pepper Squid
Tender squid, lightly seasoned with Chinese five-spice, salt, and pepper, quickly grilled and served with a sweet chili dipping sauce.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb squid
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- ½ tsp Chinese five spice powder
- ½ tsp sesame oil
- ¼ cup fresh cilantro (optional)
- ¼ cup sweet chili sauce (optional)
- 2 tsp sea salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
Steps
- Clean and pat dry the squid. If large, cut the body into four roughly square portions; small squid can be opened flat.
- Score the top of the squid in a criss-cross pattern with a sharp knife. Brush lightly with oil.
- Combine sea salt, Chinese five-spice powder, and black pepper. Sprinkle generously on both sides of the squid.
- Heat a griddle pan or grill to high heat. Cook the squid for approximately 1 minute per side, until it curls and is opaque.
- Remove the cooked squid to a serving plate and drizzle with sesame oil.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve immediately with sweet chili sauce for dipping.
