Ingredients

  • 1½ lb squid
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ½ tsp Chinese five spice powder
  • ½ tsp sesame oil
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro (optional)
  • ¼ cup sweet chili sauce (optional)
  • 2 tsp sea salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper

Steps

  1. Clean and pat dry the squid. If large, cut the body into four roughly square portions; small squid can be opened flat.
  2. Score the top of the squid in a criss-cross pattern with a sharp knife. Brush lightly with oil.
  3. Combine sea salt, Chinese five-spice powder, and black pepper. Sprinkle generously on both sides of the squid.
  4. Heat a griddle pan or grill to high heat. Cook the squid for approximately 1 minute per side, until it curls and is opaque.
  5. Remove the cooked squid to a serving plate and drizzle with sesame oil.
  6. Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves and serve immediately with sweet chili sauce for dipping.
