Spaghetti Bolognese
A classic Italian comfort food featuring a rich, slow-simmered beef and tomato sauce served over al dente spaghetti.
Ingredients
- 2 onion
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 clove garlic
- 1⅛ lb lean ground beef
- 3.2 oz mushrooms
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- 14½ oz canned diced tomatoes
- 1¼ cup hot beef broth
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ¾ lb spaghetti
- ¼ cup Parmesan cheese (optional)
- 0 salt
- 0 black pepper
Steps
- Chop onions and mince garlic. Heat olive oil in a large pan over medium-high heat, then add onions and fry for 3-4 minutes until softened. Add garlic and ground beef, breaking it up, and cook until browned.
- Drain any excess fat from the beef. Add sliced mushrooms and dried oregano to the pan, cooking for another 2 minutes.
- Stir in the canned tomatoes, beef broth, tomato paste, and Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- While the sauce simmers, cook spaghetti according to package directions in a large pot of boiling, salted water until al dente. Drain well.
- Combine the cooked spaghetti with the Bolognese sauce in the pan.
- Serve hot in bowls, topped with grated Parmesan cheese if desired.
