Black Pepper Beef
A classic Chinese-American stir-fry featuring tender beef strips coated in a savory, peppery sauce with crisp bell peppers and onions.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb flank steak
- 2 tbsp cornstarch
- 4 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp oyster sauce
- 1 tbsp sugar
- 2 tsp black pepper
- 4 clove garlic
- 1 tbsp ginger
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 3 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1 green bell pepper
- 1 yellow onion
- 2 scallions (optional)
- 4 cup cooked white rice (optional)
Steps
- Slice the flank steak against the grain into thin strips. In a bowl, toss beef with 1 tablespoon cornstarch and 1 tablespoon soy sauce; set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together remaining 3 tablespoons soy sauce, oyster sauce, sugar, 1.5 teaspoons black pepper, and sesame oil to create the sauce. Mince garlic and ginger.
- Slice bell peppers and onion into thin strips. Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add beef and stir-fry until browned, about 2-3 minutes. Remove beef and set aside.
- Add remaining 2 tablespoons vegetable oil to the skillet. Add bell peppers and onion and stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until slightly tender-crisp. Add minced garlic and ginger and stir-fry for 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Return beef to the skillet. Pour in the prepared sauce and remaining 0.5 teaspoon black pepper. Stir well to coat all ingredients and cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Serve immediately over cooked white rice, garnished with sliced scallions if desired.
