Jamaican Steamed Cabbage
A simple yet flavorful Jamaican side dish featuring tender steamed cabbage with aromatic vegetables and a hint of scotch bonnet spice.
Ingredients
- 1 head cabbage
- 2 carrots
- 1 plum tomatoes
- 1 onion
- 4 cloves garlic
- 4 green onions
- 4 sprigs thyme
- ½ scotch bonnet (optional)
- 2 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 2 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp black pepper
Steps
- Chop cabbage, slice carrots, chop plum tomatoes and onion, mince garlic, and chop green onions.
- Add all ingredients (cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, onion, garlic, green onions, thyme, scotch bonnet, water, olive oil, butter, salt, and pepper) to a large pan.
- Cover the pan with a lid and cook over medium heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Reduce heat to low and continue to cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the cabbage is soft and tender.
- Remove the pan from the heat.
- Remove the thyme sprigs before serving.
