Pepper Steak with Onions
Tender strips of beef and bell peppers are stir-fried with savory onions in a classic Chinese-American sauce.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb flank steak
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- 1 tbsp cornstarch
- 1 tsp sesame oil
- 2 clove garlic
- 1 tbsp ginger
- 2 large bell peppers
- 1 large yellow onion
- ½ cup beef broth
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 2 cup white rice (optional)
Steps
- Slice the flank steak against the grain into thin strips. In a bowl, toss the beef with 1 tablespoon soy sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Mince garlic and ginger, slice bell peppers and onion into strips.
- In a small bowl, whisk together remaining soy sauce, beef broth, and brown sugar to create the sauce.
- Heat 1 tablespoon vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add beef and stir-fry until browned, about 2-3 minutes. Remove beef from skillet and set aside.
- Add remaining 1 tablespoon vegetable oil to the skillet. Add onions and bell peppers and stir-fry for 3-5 minutes until slightly tender-crisp. Add minced garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
- Return the cooked beef to the skillet with the vegetables. Pour the prepared sauce over everything and stir to combine. Bring to a simmer and cook for 1-2 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Serve immediately over steamed white rice, if desired.
