Pork Carnitas Tacos
Tender, slow-cooked pork carnitas are nestled into warm tortillas with fresh toppings for an authentic Mexican taco experience.
Ingredients
- 2 lb pork shoulder
- 1 orange
- 1 lime
- 1 onion
- 4 clove garlic
- 1 cup chicken broth
- ¼ cup lard (optional)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp cumin
- ½ tsp oregano
- 12 corn tortillas
- ¼ cup cilantro (optional)
- ¼ cup diced onion (optional)
- ½ cup salsa verde (optional)
Steps
- Cut pork shoulder into 2-inch chunks. Season generously with salt, cumin, and oregano.
- Place pork in a slow cooker. Add sliced orange, lime, onion, minced garlic, and chicken broth.
- Cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours, until pork is very tender and easily shreds.
- Remove pork from slow cooker, reserving the liquid. Shred the pork using two forks.
- In a large skillet, heat lard over medium-high heat (optional, for extra crispiness). Add shredded pork and cook until crispy and browned, adding a splash of the reserved cooking liquid as needed to keep it moist.
- Warm corn tortillas. Fill with crispy carnitas.
- Serve with optional toppings like fresh cilantro, diced onion, and salsa verde.
