Sesame Chicken
Crispy fried chicken pieces tossed in a sweet and savory sesame sauce, a classic Chinese-American dish.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs
- ½ cup cornstarch
- 1 egg
- ¼ cup soy sauce
- ¼ cup honey
- 2 tbsp rice vinegar
- 1 tbsp sesame oil
- 1 tbsp ginger, grated
- 2 clove garlic, minced
- ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
- 1 tbsp sesame seeds
- 2 scallions, sliced (optional)
- 2 cup vegetable oil
Steps
- Cut chicken into 1-inch pieces. In a bowl, whisk egg, then toss chicken to coat. In another bowl, dredge chicken in cornstarch until fully coated.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Fry chicken in batches until golden brown and cooked through, about 3-5 minutes per batch. Remove and drain on a paper towel-lined plate.
- In a separate small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, honey, rice vinegar, sesame oil, grated ginger, minced garlic, and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Drain all but 1 tablespoon of oil from the skillet. Pour the sauce into the skillet and bring to a simmer, stirring constantly until slightly thickened.
- Add the fried chicken back to the skillet and toss to coat evenly with the sauce.
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds and sliced scallions (if using). Serve immediately, perhaps with steamed rice.
