Sweet and Sour Tofu
A classic take on sweet and sour, featuring crispy pan-fried tofu coated in a vibrant, tangy sauce with bell peppers and pineapple.
Ingredients
- 16 oz extra-firm tofu
- 3 tbsp cornstarch
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 red bell pepper
- 1 green bell pepper
- ½ white onion
- 8 oz canned pineapple chunks
- 2 clove garlic
- 1 tsp ginger
- ½ cup ketchup
- ¼ cup rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp soy sauce
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- ¼ cup water
- 1 tsp sesame oil (optional)
- 4 cup cooked white rice (optional)
Steps
- Press tofu to remove excess water, then cut into 1-inch cubes. Toss tofu with cornstarch until evenly coated.
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over medium-high heat. Add tofu and cook, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy on all sides, about 8-10 minutes. Remove tofu from skillet and set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk together ketchup, rice vinegar, soy sauce, brown sugar, and water to make the sweet and sour sauce.
- Add chopped bell peppers and onion to the same skillet and stir-fry for 3-5 minutes until slightly tender-crisp. Add minced garlic and grated ginger, cooking for 1 minute more until fragrant.
- Stir in the pineapple chunks and the prepared sweet and sour sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
- Return the crispy tofu to the skillet, tossing gently to coat with the sauce. Drizzle with sesame oil if using.
- Serve immediately, optionally over cooked white rice.
