Air Fryer Fried Chicken

Enjoy crispy, juicy fried chicken with less oil by making it in the air fryer.

⏱ 45 min🍽 Serves 4Americanothermedium

Ingredients

  • 2½ lb chicken drumsticks and/or thighs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tbsp onion powder
  • ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 cooking spray

Steps

  1. Pat chicken dry with paper towels. Place chicken in a bowl and pour buttermilk over it, ensuring all pieces are coated. Marinate for at least 30 minutes in the refrigerator, or up to 4 hours.
  2. In a shallow dish, whisk together flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and black pepper.
  3. Remove chicken from buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Dredge each piece thoroughly in the flour mixture, pressing to ensure a thick, even coating.
  4. Preheat air fryer to 375°F (190°C). Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place chicken pieces in a single layer in the basket, ensuring not to overcrowd (cook in batches if necessary).
  5. Lightly spray the tops of the chicken pieces with cooking spray.
  6. Air fry for 15 minutes, then flip the chicken, spray again, and continue to cook for another 10-15 minutes, or until internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) and the coating is golden brown and crispy.
  7. Remove from air fryer and let rest for a few minutes before serving.
