Ingredients

  • ¾ lb ground beef
  • ¾ lb ground lamb
  • 4 pita bread (optional)
  • 1 cucumber
  • ½ red onion
  • 2 Roma tomatoes
  • 1 head romaine lettuce
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 clove garlic
  • 1 cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 2 tbsp fresh dill (optional)
  • 1½ tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

Steps

  1. Grate half of the cucumber and finely chop the garlic. In a small bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber, chopped garlic, 1 tablespoon of fresh dill (if using), and a squeeze of lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper to taste; set aside to let flavors meld.
  2. Dice the remaining cucumber, tomatoes, and red onion. Roughly chop the romaine lettuce. Set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add ground beef and ground lamb. Break up the meat with a spoon and cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes.
  4. Drain any excess grease from the meat. Stir in oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 2-3 minutes, until fragrant.
  5. Warm pita bread in a dry skillet or microwave, if using.
  6. To assemble the bowls, divide the chopped romaine lettuce among four bowls. Top with the seasoned beef and lamb mixture.
  7. Arrange the diced cucumber, tomatoes, and red onion around the meat.
  8. Drizzle generously with the prepared tzatziki sauce. Serve immediately, with warm pita bread on the side if desired.
