Burek (Beef and Onion)
A savory Croatian pastry featuring layers of flaky filo dough filled with a seasoned mixture of ground beef and onion, baked until golden.
Ingredients
- 16 sheets filo pastry
- ¾ lb ground beef
- 1½ onion
- ¼ cup vegetable oil
- ¾ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Steps
- Preheat oven to 390 G (200 G). Finely chop the onions.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a pan over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the pan with the onions. Break it up with a spoon and cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes. Drain any excess fat. Season with salt and pepper.
- Lightly grease a 9-inch round baking tray with oil. Lay 2 sheets of filo pastry in the tray, allowing some to overhang, and brush generously with oil.
- Spread a thin layer of the beef and onion filling over the filo. Cover with 2 more sheets of filo, brush with oil, and repeat the layering process until all filling is used, typically 5-6 layers. Ensure the top layer is filo and well-oiled.
- Fold any overhanging filo pastry over the top to seal the burek. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and crisp.
- Let cool slightly before cutting into quarters and serving warm.
