Classic Tuna Melt
A comforting classic, this tuna melt features flaky tuna salad and melted cheese grilled between slices of buttery bread.
Ingredients
- 12 oz canned tuna in water, drained
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- ½ cup celery, finely chopped (optional)
- ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped (optional)
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 8 oz cheddar cheese, sliced
- 8 slice sandwich bread
- 4 tbsp butter
Steps
- In a medium bowl, flake the drained tuna. Add mayonnaise, celery (if using), red onion (if using), Dijon mustard (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
- Butter one side of each slice of bread.
- Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place four slices of bread, butter-side down, in the skillet.
- Top each bread slice with a slice of cheese, a generous scoop of tuna salad, and another slice of cheese.
- Place the remaining four slices of bread, butter-side up, on top of the tuna and cheese.
- Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling.
- Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately.
