Classic Tuna Melt

A comforting classic, this tuna melt features flaky tuna salad and melted cheese grilled between slices of buttery bread.

Ingredients

  • 12 oz canned tuna in water, drained
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • ½ cup celery, finely chopped (optional)
  • ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 8 oz cheddar cheese, sliced
  • 8 slice sandwich bread
  • 4 tbsp butter

Steps

  1. In a medium bowl, flake the drained tuna. Add mayonnaise, celery (if using), red onion (if using), Dijon mustard (if using), salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine.
  2. Butter one side of each slice of bread.
  3. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place four slices of bread, butter-side down, in the skillet.
  4. Top each bread slice with a slice of cheese, a generous scoop of tuna salad, and another slice of cheese.
  5. Place the remaining four slices of bread, butter-side up, on top of the tuna and cheese.
  6. Cook for 3-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and bubbly. Press gently with a spatula to ensure even grilling.
  7. Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately.
