French Dip Sandwiches
Savor the classic French Dip, featuring thinly sliced roast beef piled high on a crusty baguette, served with a rich, savory au jus for dipping.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb roast beef
- 4 cup beef broth
- 1 onion
- 2 clove garlic
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 2 baguettes
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 4 slice provolone cheese (optional)
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Steps
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Slice the onion thinly and mince the garlic.
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute more.
- Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat and let it gently simmer for 20-30 minutes to develop flavor.
- Slice baguettes lengthwise and lightly toast them in the oven for 5 minutes.
- Thinly slice the roast beef. Add the sliced beef to the simmering au jus for 1-2 minutes to warm through.
- Remove bay leaf from the au jus. Arrange the warmed beef onto the toasted baguette halves. If desired, top with provolone cheese and return to the oven for 2-3 minutes until cheese is melted.
- Serve sandwiches immediately with small bowls of the hot au jus for dipping.
