French Toast Bake
A delightful and easy-to-make breakfast casserole featuring challah bread soaked in a sweet, custardy mixture and baked to golden perfection.
Ingredients
- ¾ loaf challah bread
- 6 large eggs
- 1½ cup milk
- ½ cup heavy cream
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar (optional)
- ¼ cup maple syrup (optional)
Steps
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter.
- Cut challah bread into 1-inch cubes. Arrange the bread cubes evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread cubes, ensuring all pieces are saturated. Gently press down on the bread to help it absorb the liquid.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown and set.
- Let the French toast bake cool slightly before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup, if desired.
