Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy
Classic comfort food, these savory hamburger steaks are pan-fried and served smothered in a rich, caramelized onion gravy.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb ground beef
- 1 large yellow onion
- 2 cup beef broth
- 3 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ¾ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Steps
- Form the ground beef into 4 oval-shaped patties, about 3/4-inch thick. Season both sides of the patties with 1/2 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Slice the onion thinly. In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Sear the hamburger steaks for 4-5 minutes per side until nicely browned. Remove steaks from skillet and set aside.
- Reduce heat to medium. Add the remaining 1 tbsp oil to the skillet, then add the sliced onions. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 8-10 minutes until softened and caramelized.
- Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
- Season the gravy with the remaining 1/4 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Simmer for 5 minutes to heat through.
- Serve hot, spooning plenty of onion gravy over each hamburger steak.
