Ingredients

  • 4 dozen blue crabs, live
  • ½ cup Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1 cup water
  • 4 ears of corn
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (optional)
  • 2 lemon wedges (optional)

Steps

  1. Clean the live crabs by rinsing them under cold water. If using a steamer pot with a rack, add the water and apple cider vinegar to the bottom of the pot.
  2. Place the crabs on the steamer rack in the pot. Generously sprinkle each layer of crabs with Old Bay seasoning.
  3. Bring the liquid to a rolling boil, then cover the pot tightly. Steam the crabs for 20-25 minutes, or until they turn bright orange and are cooked through.
  4. While crabs are steaming, shuck the corn and add it to the steamer during the last 10-15 minutes of cooking, or boil separately.
  5. Melt butter in a small saucepan for dipping, if desired.
  6. Carefully remove the hot crabs and corn from the pot. Serve immediately with melted butter and lemon wedges on the side, along with plenty of newspaper for the table.
