Ground Beef Pie
A comforting British classic, this ground beef pie features savory ground beef and mushrooms in a rich gravy, all topped with a golden, flaky shortcrust pastry.
Ingredients
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1⅛ lb ground beef
- 1 onion
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1½ tbsp all-purpose flour
- 0.17 lb mushrooms
- 1 cup beef broth
- ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 0.9 lb shortcrust pastry
- 1 egg yolk
Steps
- Preheat oven to 400F (200C).
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Brown ground beef for 4-5 minutes, breaking it up.
- Add chopped onion and cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 2-3 minutes, then stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
- Add chopped mushrooms, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Let cool.
- Transfer cooled meat mixture to a 1-liter pie dish. Roll out pastry to fit over the dish, pressing firmly onto the edges. Trim and flute the edges.
- Decorate the top with pastry trimmings (optional), sticking them with beaten egg yolk. Make 3-4 slits in the pastry.
- Brush the pie with remaining egg yolk and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden-brown.
