Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1⅛ lb ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1½ tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 0.17 lb mushrooms
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 0.9 lb shortcrust pastry
  • 1 egg yolk

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 400F (200C).
  2. Heat oil in a deep frying pan. Brown ground beef for 4-5 minutes, breaking it up.
  3. Add chopped onion and cook for 2-3 minutes. Stir in tomato paste and cook for 2-3 minutes, then stir in flour and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Add chopped mushrooms, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 20 minutes. Let cool.
  5. Transfer cooled meat mixture to a 1-liter pie dish. Roll out pastry to fit over the dish, pressing firmly onto the edges. Trim and flute the edges.
  6. Decorate the top with pastry trimmings (optional), sticking them with beaten egg yolk. Make 3-4 slits in the pastry.
  7. Brush the pie with remaining egg yolk and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden-brown.
