Monte Cristo Sandwich
A delightful sweet and savory sandwich featuring ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese, dipped in egg batter and fried until golden, often served with powdered sugar and jam.
Ingredients
- 8 slice white bread
- ½ lb deli ham
- ½ lb deli turkey
- 8 slice Swiss cheese
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup milk
- 2 tsp Dijon mustard
- 4 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp powdered sugar (optional)
- ¼ cup raspberry jam (optional)
Steps
- Assemble four sandwiches: spread a thin layer of Dijon mustard on one side of each of 8 bread slices. Layer 2 slices of Swiss cheese, then ham, then turkey, then another 2 slices of Swiss cheese onto 4 of the bread slices, then top with the remaining bread slices.
- In a shallow dish, whisk together eggs and milk until well combined.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Dip each sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are fully coated.
- Place 1-2 dipped sandwiches into the hot skillet, cooking for 3-4 minutes per side, or until golden brown and the cheese is melted. Add more butter as needed for subsequent sandwiches.
- Remove sandwiches from the skillet and cut each in half, often diagonally.
- Dust with powdered sugar and serve immediately with a side of raspberry jam for dipping, if desired.
