Muffuletta Sandwich
A hearty New Orleans classic, this muffuletta sandwich features layers of cured meats, cheeses, and a tangy olive salad on a round loaf, perfect for sharing.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf round Italian bread
- 1 cup pitted green olives
- ½ cup pitted Kalamata olives
- 1 stalk celery
- ½ red bell pepper
- 2 cloves garlic
- 2 tbsp capers
- 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
- ⅓ cup extra virgin olive oil
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- 4 oz sliced genoa salami
- 4 oz sliced mortadella
- 4 oz sliced ham
- 4 oz sliced provolone cheese
- 4 oz sliced mozzarella cheese
Steps
- Finely chop green olives, Kalamata olives, celery, red bell pepper, and garlic. Combine in a bowl with capers, red wine vinegar, olive oil, oregano, and black pepper. Mix well to create the olive salad.
- Slice the round Italian bread horizontally through the middle, creating a top and bottom half. Scoop out a little of the soft bread from both halves to create more space for fillings.
- Spread a generous layer of the olive salad on the bottom half of the bread. Press it down lightly.
- Layer the sliced provolone cheese over the olive salad, followed by the sliced ham, mortadella, and salami.
- Place the sliced mozzarella cheese on top of the meats. Spread another layer of olive salad on the underside of the top bread half.
- Place the top half of the bread onto the sandwich. Wrap the entire sandwich tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 4 hours, allowing the flavors to meld.
- To serve, unwrap the sandwich and cut it into four wedges.
