Patty Melt
A classic diner sandwich featuring a juicy beef patty, melted Swiss cheese, and caramelized onions, all grilled between slices of rye bread.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb ground beef, 80/20
- 8 slice rye bread
- 8 slice Swiss cheese
- 2 medium yellow onion
- 4 tbsp butter
- 4 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Steps
- Form the ground beef into four oval patties, slightly larger than your bread slices, and season generously with salt and pepper.
- Slice the onions thinly. In a large skillet, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until deeply caramelized and soft, about 15-20 minutes. Remove onions from skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, increase heat to medium-high. Cook the beef patties for 3-4 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. Remove patties from skillet.
- Spread mayonnaise (if using) on one side of each slice of rye bread. Assemble the sandwiches by placing a slice of bread (mayo-side out), a slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, a portion of caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and finally, another slice of bread (mayo-side out).
- Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet over medium heat. Place the assembled sandwiches in the skillet and grill for 3-5 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
- Cut sandwiches in half and serve immediately.
