Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef, 80/20
  • ½ cup uncooked long-grain white rice
  • ½ cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 15 oz canned crushed tomatoes
  • 1½ cup water
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown sugar (optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, uncooked rice, chopped onion, egg, garlic powder, 0.5 tsp salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined, then form into 1.5-inch meatballs.
  2. In a large skillet or Dutch oven, combine crushed tomatoes, water, Worcestershire sauce, remaining 0.25 tsp salt, and brown sugar (if using). Bring the sauce to a simmer over medium heat.
  3. Carefully place the meatballs into the simmering sauce. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 35-40 minutes, or until rice is tender and meatballs are cooked through.
  4. Stir gently occasionally to prevent sticking. If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash more water.
  5. Serve hot, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
