Ingredients

  • 1½ lb ground beef
  • ½ cup onion
  • ½ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 8 oz cremini mushrooms
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley (optional)

Steps

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, finely diced onion, bread crumbs, egg, 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, 0.75 teaspoon salt, and 0.5 teaspoon black pepper. Mix well and form into 4 oval patties.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned. Remove patties from skillet and set aside.
  3. Add sliced mushrooms to the same skillet and cook until softened and browned, about 5-7 minutes. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly.
  4. Gradually whisk in beef broth, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Bring to a simmer, then stir in Dijon mustard if using, and remaining 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Return the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and the gravy has thickened.
  6. Garnish with fresh chopped parsley if desired and serve hot.
