Scalloped Potatoes and Ham
A comforting classic, this dish features tender sliced potatoes and savory ham baked in a creamy, cheesy sauce until golden and bubbly.
Ingredients
- 2 lb russet potatoes
- 12 oz cooked ham
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter
- 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
- 2 cup milk
- ½ cup heavy cream
- 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
- ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated (optional)
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ½ tsp onion powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)
Steps
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Peel and thinly slice potatoes (about 1/8-inch thick). Dice the cooked ham into 1/2-inch cubes.
- In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute until a smooth paste (roux) forms. Gradually whisk in milk and heavy cream until smooth.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the diced ham, then pour half of the cheese sauce evenly over the ham.
- Repeat with the remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce. If desired, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 20-30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
- Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
