Ingredients

  • 2 lb russet potatoes
  • 12 oz cooked ham
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 4 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cup milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese, grated (optional)
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Steps

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Peel and thinly slice potatoes (about 1/8-inch thick). Dice the cooked ham into 1/2-inch cubes.
  2. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute until a smooth paste (roux) forms. Gradually whisk in milk and heavy cream until smooth.
  3. Bring the sauce to a simmer, stirring constantly, until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in shredded cheddar cheese, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper until cheese is melted and sauce is smooth.
  4. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the diced ham, then pour half of the cheese sauce evenly over the ham.
  5. Repeat with the remaining potatoes, ham, and cheese sauce. If desired, sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese.
  6. Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 20-30 minutes, or until potatoes are tender and the top is golden brown and bubbly.
  7. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired.
