Sloppy Joes
A classic American comfort food, Sloppy Joes feature a savory ground beef and tomato sauce mixture served on toasted hamburger buns.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium onion
- ½ medium green bell pepper
- 2 cloves garlic
- ¾ cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- ½ tsp chili powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
- ¼ cup water
- 4 hamburger buns
- ½ cup cheddar cheese (optional)
Steps
- In a large skillet, brown ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain excess fat.
- Add chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until vegetables soften, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, chili powder, salt, pepper, and water.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 10-15 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken.
- While the sloppy joe mixture simmers, lightly toast the hamburger buns.
- Spoon the hot sloppy joe mixture onto the toasted hamburger buns.
- Optionally, top with shredded cheddar cheese before serving.
