Syrian Bread

Ingredients

  • 3 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1½ tsp active dry yeast
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • 1½ tsp salt
  • 1⅛ cup water
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

Steps

  1. Combine water, oil, sugar, salt, flour, and yeast in a large bowl or stand mixer. Knead for 8-10 minutes until a smooth, elastic dough forms.
  2. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes, or until doubled in size.
  3. Gently punch down the dough and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Form each piece into a smooth ball.
  4. Cover the dough balls with a damp cloth and let them rest for 15-20 minutes.
  5. Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C) with a baking sheet or pizza stone inside.
  6. On a lightly floured surface, roll each dough ball into a thin, 8-inch diameter circle.
  7. Carefully place 2 flatbreads on the hot baking sheet or stone. Bake for about 5 minutes, or until puffed and lightly golden.
  8. Repeat with the remaining dough circles. Serve warm.
