Ingredients

  • 8 oz tempeh
  • 15 oz canned black beans
  • ½ red onion
  • 2 garlic cloves
  • ½ bell pepper
  • ½ cup oats (rolled)
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp cumin
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 burger buns
  • 4 lettuce leaves (optional)
  • 4 tomato slices (optional)
  • 4 slices pickles (optional)
  • 4 tbsp vegan mayonnaise (optional)

Steps

  1. Crumble the tempeh into small pieces. Drain and rinse the black beans.
  2. Finely dice the red onion and bell pepper, and mince the garlic.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Sauté the onion, bell pepper, and garlic for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the crumbled tempeh, black beans, sautéed vegetables, rolled oats, smoked paprika, cumin, salt, and pepper. Mash with a fork or potato masher until well combined but still chunky.
  5. Form the mixture into 4 patties. Heat the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil in the same skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for 5-7 minutes per side until golden brown and heated through.
  6. Serve the tempeh and black bean burgers on buns with your desired toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickles, and vegan mayonnaise.
