Ingredients

  • 4 bratwurst
  • 1 yellow onion
  • 12 fl oz beer (lager or pilsner)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 4 hot dog buns
  • 1½ cup sauerkraut (optional)
  • 4 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper

Steps

  1. Slice the yellow onion thinly.
  2. Melt butter in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Add bratwurst to the skillet with the onions. Pour in the beer. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until brats are cooked through.
  4. Remove brats from the liquid. Increase heat to medium-high and sear the brats in the same skillet for 3-5 minutes per side, until browned and slightly crispy.
  5. Toast the hot dog buns if desired.
  6. Serve each bratwurst in a bun, topped with the cooked onions, sauerkraut, and a dollop of Dijon mustard.
