Wisconsin Beer Brat Plate
Enjoy a classic Wisconsin Beer Brat Plate featuring juicy bratwurst simmered in beer and onions, served on a bun with sauerkraut and mustard.
Ingredients
- 4 bratwurst
- 1 yellow onion
- 12 fl oz beer (lager or pilsner)
- 1 tbsp butter
- 4 hot dog buns
- 1½ cup sauerkraut (optional)
- 4 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
- ½ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp black pepper
Steps
- Slice the yellow onion thinly.
- Melt butter in a large skillet or pot over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook until softened and translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add bratwurst to the skillet with the onions. Pour in the beer. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until brats are cooked through.
- Remove brats from the liquid. Increase heat to medium-high and sear the brats in the same skillet for 3-5 minutes per side, until browned and slightly crispy.
- Toast the hot dog buns if desired.
- Serve each bratwurst in a bun, topped with the cooked onions, sauerkraut, and a dollop of Dijon mustard.
