Ingredients

  • 1½ lb ground beef
  • 4 cheddar cheese slices
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 4 lettuce leaves
  • 1 tomato
  • ½ red onion
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 2 tbsp dill pickle relish
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 4 pickles (optional)

Steps

  1. Form ground beef into four equal patties, about 1/2 inch thick. Season generously with salt and pepper.
  2. Preheat a grill or large skillet over medium-high heat. Toast hamburger buns lightly on the grill or in a dry pan; set aside.
  3. Cook patties for 3-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, or until desired doneness. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheese on each patty to melt.
  4. While patties cook, slice tomato and red onion. In a small bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, and dill pickle relish for the special sauce.
  5. Assemble burgers: Spread special sauce on both halves of the toasted buns. Layer with lettuce, tomato, red onion, a cheeseburger patty, and pickles (if using).
  6. Serve immediately with your favorite sides.
