⏱ 30 min🍽 Serves 4Americansandwicheasy

Ingredients

  • 1½ lb ground beef
  • 8 slice rye bread
  • 8 slice Swiss cheese
  • 2 medium yellow onion
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • ¾ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper

Steps

  1. Form ground beef into four equal patties and season generously with salt and pepper.
  2. Slice onions thinly and caramelize them in a skillet over medium-low heat with 2 tablespoons of butter and a pinch of salt until deeply golden and soft, about 15-20 minutes.
  3. Cook beef patties in a separate skillet over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. Remove from skillet and set aside.
  4. Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place 4 slices butter-side down in a clean skillet over medium heat.
  5. Top each bread slice with one slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, a portion of caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and then another slice of rye bread, butter-side up.
  6. Grill the sandwiches for 3-5 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
  7. Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately.
