Classic Patty Melt
A timeless American diner classic, this patty melt features a juicy beef patty, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese all grilled between slices of rye bread.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb ground beef
- 8 slice rye bread
- 8 slice Swiss cheese
- 2 medium yellow onion
- 4 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil
- ¾ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
Steps
- Form ground beef into four equal patties and season generously with salt and pepper.
- Slice onions thinly and caramelize them in a skillet over medium-low heat with 2 tablespoons of butter and a pinch of salt until deeply golden and soft, about 15-20 minutes.
- Cook beef patties in a separate skillet over medium-high heat for 3-4 minutes per side, or until desired doneness. Remove from skillet and set aside.
- Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place 4 slices butter-side down in a clean skillet over medium heat.
- Top each bread slice with one slice of Swiss cheese, a beef patty, a portion of caramelized onions, another slice of Swiss cheese, and then another slice of rye bread, butter-side up.
- Grill the sandwiches for 3-5 minutes per side, pressing gently, until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
- Remove from skillet, slice in half, and serve immediately.
