Fried Mozzarella Sticks
Crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, these homemade mozzarella sticks are a delightful snack or appetizer.
Ingredients
- 1 lb mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- ½ cup milk
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp olive oil
- 4 cup vegetable oil
Steps
- Cut the mozzarella into 16 uniform strips (about 3-4 inches long and 1/2 inch thick). Place them in the fridge to firm up.
- In a large bowl, combine flour, melted butter, egg, sugar, salt, and olive oil. Gradually add milk and knead until a smooth, pliable dough forms.
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Cut the dough into strips about 1 inch wide and 6-8 inches long.
- Wrap each dough strip spirally around a chilled mozzarella stick, ensuring the cheese is completely covered to prevent melting during frying. Pinch the ends to seal.
- Lightly dredge the wrapped cheese sticks in a small amount of extra flour to prevent sticking.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep frying pan or pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully fry the cheese sticks in batches for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a wire rack lined with paper towels to drain excess oil. Serve immediately.
