Hamburger Steak with Onion Gravy
A comforting classic, this hamburger steak is smothered in a rich, savory onion gravy.
Ingredients
- 1½ lb ground beef
- 2 yellow onion
- 2 cup beef broth
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- ¾ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
Steps
- Form ground beef into 4 equal patties. Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear patties for 3-4 minutes per side until browned, then remove from skillet and set aside.
- Add sliced onions to the same skillet, scraping up any browned bits. Cook until softened and lightly caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
- Sprinkle flour over the onions and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, bringing the gravy to a simmer. Cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, nestling them into the gravy. Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until cooked through.
